In partnership with the Tata Group, the BCCI plants 500 green tree saplings across India for every single dot ball bowled during the IPL Playoff matches (Qualifier 1, Eliminator, Qualifier 2, and the Final). In the 2023 and 2024 playoffs, hundreds of dot balls resulted in over 150,000 trees being planted annually under the 'Green Dot Balls' environmental campaign.

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Rajasthan Royals (RR) were suspended for two seasons (2016 and 2017) by the Supreme Court-appointed Justice RM Lodha Committee. Introduced in IPL 2023, the Impact Player rule permits each team to name 5 substitutes at the toss in addition to their starting XI. During the match, either team may replace any starting player with one of the 5 named substitutes at the start of an innings, when a wicket falls, or at the end of an over. The substituted player can bat and bowl their full quota of 4 overs, but the replaced player takes no further part in the match. If a team starts with 4 overseas players, the Impact Player must be Indian.

Net Run Rate (NRR) is calculated by dividing total runs scored by total overs faced, and subtracting total runs conceded divided by total overs bowled: NRR = (Total Runs Scored / Total Overs Faced) - (Total Runs Conceded / Total Overs Bowled). Crucially, if a team is bowled out (all out) before completing their 20 overs, they are deemed to have batted the full 20.0 overs for NRR calculations.

If an IPL match ends in a tie (scores level after both 20-over innings), a Super Over is played. Each team bats for one 6-ball over with up to 3 nominated batters (2 wickets ends the over). The team batting second in the match bats first in the Super Over. If the Super Over also ends in a tie, subsequent Super Overs are played until a clear winner emerges. The controversial 'boundary countback' rule was permanently abolished by the ICC and BCCI following the 2019 World Cup.

A maximum of 4 overseas players are allowed in a team's Playing XI for any IPL match. If a team chooses to field fewer than 4 overseas players in their starting lineup (e.g., 3), they can bring on an overseas player as their Impact Player, as long as the total number of overseas players active on the field does not exceed 4 at any moment.

The IPL utilizes the Page playoff system: Top 4 teams on the points table qualify. Qualifier 1 features Rank 1 vs Rank 2; the winner advances directly to the Final, while the loser gets a second chance in Qualifier 2. The Eliminator features Rank 3 vs Rank 4; the loser is eliminated immediately. Qualifier 2 pits the loser of Qualifier 1 against the winner of the Eliminator. The winner of Qualifier 2 meets the winner of Qualifier 1 in the Grand Final.

Each IPL innings features two Strategic Time-Outs, each lasting exactly 2 minutes and 30 seconds (total of 4 per match). In each innings, the bowling team must take one time-out between overs 6 and 8, and the batting team must take their time-out between overs 11 and 16. It is used for tactical consultation, fluid intake, and advertising broadcast.
